What is resilience? Resilience is the ability to overcome, adapt, and move forward when challenges arise. It is an ongoing, personal process that allows you to respond to adversity, stress, and challenges in a healthy manner.

Why is it important to be resilient? Regardless of who you are, at some point in your life, you will experience adversity and challenges. This may be anything from experiencing family and relationship problems, health concerns, or perhaps workplace stressors. The way in which you respond to these life events will vary depending on your level of resiliency. The resilient individual will view adversity as an event from which he can move forward and grow. The less resilient individual will view adversity as a setback or roadblock from moving forward. Accordingly, the benefits of being resilient are substantial. Research has shown that people with high resiliency are more successful, happier, and less prone to mental and physical health issues.

Can I become more resilient? Yes! Being resilient is an intentional choice and a way of living that can be learned and developed. While cultural background and spiritual beliefs may predispose you to be more or less resilient, you are capable of increasing your level of resilience. Adopt a Growth Mindset

When you adopt the mindset that challenges and adversity are a way to get stronger, life's curveballs will no longer be seen as insurmountable. A notable difference of resilient individuals is that they view challenges as a means to grow, develop, and evolve. The first step is acknowledging your thoughts and beliefs about a situation directly impacts how you feel in a situation. If you see challenges as a roadblock or a set back, your negative perspective will hinder your ability to bounce back. Instead ask yourself, what is this trying to teach me? What have I gained from this experience? What can I do differently next time?

Practice Acceptance

An important step in addressing a challenge is to accept what you can control and what is outside of your control. This allows you to effectively and efficiently utilize your resources and energy on action steps that will help you pull through the adversity.

Increase Self Confidence

High self esteem is a strong predictor of an increased ability to cope and recover from difficult events. By improving your self esteem, your confidence in the strengths and qualities you possess will help you navigate through challenges easier.

Take Care of Yourself

Your mental and physical well being can greatly impact your ability to move forward. Consciously make the decision to maintain a hopeful outlook, nurture yourself, an address basic needs such as sleep, nutrition, and exercise.

Establish Strong Relationships

Cultivate strong, supportive relationships with family members, friends, or within your community. When you face life's challenges, this support network will be invaluable to express your feelings, gain support, and brainstorm solutions. Establishing and building upon these relationships can make all the difference of not feeling alone in your times of struggle.
